Structural and Mechanical Modification Induced by Water Content in Giant Wild Reed (A. donax L.)
2018
Giant wild reed Arundo donax L. is an aggressive agricultural species with remarkable features such as fast-growing, untapped economic potential, eco-friendliness, and high specific properties (e.g., high strength/weight and modulus/weight ratios). Here, the bending properties of giant reed were studied at a molecular level to evaluate the effect of the conditions used during the preparation for their applications (also referred to as treatment conditions). The aim was to achieve new information potentially useful to suggest new possible applications of A. donax L. for structural applications in modern buildings. In this study, green reeds collected in a Sicilian plantation were dried for 2…
Autonomous Operation of Stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems—Optimal Storage Design and Economic Potential
2021
Global warming requires a changeover from fossil fuel based to renewable energy sources on the electrical supply side and electrification of the demand side. Due to the transient nature of renewables and fluctuating demand, buffer capacities are necessary to compensate for supply/demand imbalances. Battery energy storage systems are promising. However, the initial costs are high. Repurposing electric vehicle batteries can reduce initial costs. Further, storage design optimization could significantly improve costs. Therefore, a battery control algorithm was developed, and a simulation study was performed to identify the optimal storage design and its economic potential. The algorithm used is…
Assessment of the technical and economic potential of offshore wind energy via a GIS application: A case study for the Sicily Region according to Ita…
2015
This paper presents a technical and economic analysis of the possible exploitation of offshore wind resources using spatial analysis methods based on GIS tools. The study assessed the magnitude and distribution of the main constraints on installation of wind farms by taking into account the relevant technical factors and local laws on nature protection issues in a specific area, i.e., Sicily. Specific cost functions were defined for several components of the total cost of construction and maintenance of a wind farm. Several scenarios were implemented according to wind turbine size, hub height, total wind farm power, and distance from the coast, and the levelised production cost was assessed…
Valorization of waste and by-products from food industries through the use of innovative technologies
2020
Abstract Food waste and by-products, which are normally regarded as not being valuable, have great potential for valuable compounds production. Valorization of these materials not only means more nutrients or bioactive compounds, but also addresses environmental issues caused by discarding these “waste” materials. This chapter discusses the nutritive and economic potential of food waste and by-products, as well as the application of innovative technologies (i.e., electrotechnologies, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, nanotechnology, pressurized fluids) in food waste and by-products valorization. Such technologies improve the perspectives regarding waste utilization, paving the ways tow…
Innovation – A Challenge for the 21st Century Managers
2015
Abstract The knowledge based economy entails more and more the intangible assets as a main tendency in the actual times. In the new economy, what counts is the model of thinking and the creation, which represent the key of the competition. The property of the ideas and the way one turns to advantage the economic potential of these, are the factors that bear more and more upon the future of the organizations and of companies, and this is also the one that gives the competitive advantage on the market. In this paper we have as a purpose framing the importance of innovation within the organizations, the problems that the managers confront during this process and also to present an evaluation m…
Paths and Erratic Emotions of Natural and Cultural Landscapes: Mobility, Slow Fruition and Exploration of Economic Potentiality
2017
In recent years there is greater awareness of the need to match up the large amount of historical and environmental heritage of the Italian territory with the quality and concentration of cultural heritage and tourist services and put them into a network, through a new system of mobility. Urban and territorial policies should identify strategies and projects favoring the connections and use of sites, the perception of landscapes and the subjective emotions they arouse in the community. This interdisciplinary paper aims to rediscover the values and diversity of natural and cultural landscapes in Sicily by following slow routes immersed in valuable rural and urban areas. The proposed investig…
